A Message from DIAM Spokesperson April Holmes

Most U.S. workers would face dire financial consequences if they were unable to work for an extended period of time due to a disabling illness or injury. A recent survey found that 70 percent of working Americans say they could only afford to take one month or less of unpaid vacation before everyday expenses would force them to return to work. But what happens to someone when they can’t return to work within a month? Bills pile up. Mortgage payments get missed. Everyday needs go unmet. Unfortunately, this is a scenario that plays out all too often in the U.S.

May 2008 is Disability Insurance Awareness Month. It’s a time when the entire insurance industry is coming together to do something about the enormous gap that exists between Americans’ need for disability income protection and the actual coverage they have in place. The LIFE Foundation is coordinating this first-ever, industry-wide campaign and dozens of insurance companies and other industry groups are expected to participate with awareness-building and marketing efforts of their own.

But companies and associations can only do so much. People need help assessing their needs and understanding their options. That’s where insurance professionals like you come in. You can make an important contribution to Disability Insurance Awareness Month by dedicating May to helping people in your community with their disability insurance needs and motivating them to take action.
